Around Sainte Colombe de Duras
The pretty little town of Duras, perched high on an escarpment above the valley of the river Dropt is a few minutes away. Here there are local shops, bars and restaurants as well as the old Chateau of the Ducs de Duras which is now a museum.
In summer the chateau is used for concerts and other events including a wine fair in late July or August, featuring the local appellation - les Cotes de Duras.
Duras has a lively open air market every Monday morning where locals sell everything from fresh produce, fish, meats, baguettes and pastries, to household goods and flowers.
Around Duras many leisure activities are to be found. A splendid golf course and spa are available at Chateau des Vigiers - about 20 minutes away - as are canoeing, boat trips and tennis. Just North of Duras is the Lac de Castelgaillard at St Sernin de Duras, with watersports, beaches, and horse riding.
The market town of Sainte Foy la Grande on the river Dordogne is about 14 km away. There is an excellent selection of restaurants and bars, shops, antique stores, and cinema. Be sure to arrive early for its popular open air market on Saturday mornings.
The charming bastide - fortress - village of Monsegur is only 5 km away. The village offers several cafes, a tea room and restaurants. Monsegur is probably best known for its internationally renowned Jazz Festival - 24 Hours of Swing - that takes place every year at the beginning of July. It's an unforgettable weekend of jazz, wine and dance.
The peaceful beauty of this countryside has attracted people from around the world who seek a more simple, tranquil life. The celebrated Buddhist monk and best selling author Thich Nhat Hanh chose the neighboring village of Dieulivol, in the hamlet Martineau, for the location of his international retreat center Plum Village.
